Scope

Deep in the Pennsylvania mountains, a 130-year-old 48” diecast iron pipe was about to reach condemned status and was taken out of service. The Gabe’s team was hired to slipline the entire uninterrupted length of 4,200 LF with 42” HDPE — a pipe weight of 861,000 pounds.  As you can imagine, this was no small task.

Challenges

Gabe’s had to install the sliplining without damaging the existing pipe. To accomplish this, several off-site laboratory tests were conducted to determine theoretical coefficients of friction. Those test results indicated a need for both extensive lubrication and special pulling requirements. They developed a custom leading tool to prep the 48” host pipe, adhered to all requirements, and completed the Slipline with pull loads less than 220,000 pounds.
