In the fall of 2009, Gabe’s placed 9,998’ of 1-2” HDPE, 966’ of 1-4” HDPE, 11, 274’ of fiber optic cable and 16 3’x5x2’ handholes all side the Railroad ROW in Clinton, Iowa. This work was performed because of the need to relocate the Sprint fiber optic cable at the time because of some railroad work that was being performed. Throughout the project there were many changes that needed to happen in the field because of access issues.
Some of the challenges on this project were, as mentioned earlier, access to the Railroad ROW. We had to improvise quite a bit because of this. Making bores either longer or shorter depending on the access. Another challenge we faced was how close we were drilling in proximity to the railroad. At times it was right on the railroad and Gabe’s & inspector had to plan accordingly as we would have to shut down due to the train traffic daily.
